Issues - Urban sprawl

Edmonton can no longer afford to pursue the endless expansion into newer and farther flung suburbs, which has characterized the past few decades.

The city is already struggling to support its existing infrastructure, let alone accommodate demands for new roads, schools, fire halls, police stations and other amenities, which all new neighbourhoods expect. The $260 million for 23 Ave interchange is just one example of the the consequences of urban sprawl. Our city must find a better way to take advantage of existing infrastructure or we will continue the growing trend of people moving to the perimeter, which leaves an under-utilized core in the middle of the city.

We must support traditional neighbourhoods so they can both accommodate and attract our expanding population. And we must find a way to bring our sister cities and the provincial government to the table, to create a regional plan that is sustainable and effective.
